There is definitely value in keeping this project alive. I work for a fortune 500 with thousands of enterprise mobile devices running WinMo 5.0 planning to redeploy WinMo 6.1/6.5. I found this project very exciting.

It would be very kind of the team to update the documentation and the reference implementation sample that uses the latest mobile application blocks.

If this has already been done, then can someone point me to that resource link ?

Thanks again!

your framework is very interessting.

I know the Windows phone 7 will come soon, but Im developing software for industrial purposes.

So i think i probably won't be able to use the new compact framework 4.0. Therefore i'm looking for frameworks i can use with compact framework 3.5.

Is there any further development on your project?

Kind regards svbirdy

New Post: Guidance Package(s) ?

Well, this Community Release of the Mobile Application Blocks are not "Software Factory" oriented. What we're looking for is to provide a simpler adoption path without major requirements like GAT and GAX would be.

That's the reason why you won't find a Guidance Package as part of the Blocks. We're just providing the blocks source code, so you can use what you need without passing thru a complex setup. You can actually just pull one block and use it on your project.

However, your concern definitely makes sense, as the former MCSF includes a DSA wizard that makes easier to setup a new DSA based on a Web Reference for C# projects (not for VB.Net).

About that wizard, I was working on a port of that code to the current version of GAT/GAX and VS2008, and I will publish it very soon in the Mobile Contrib project as a community contribution, so if you want to use it on VS 2008, you will be able to do it.

Also, we are working on a Reference Implementation (which is pretty much done), that includes a manual implementation of a DSA. Andy Wigley is building (if it's not already done) a QuickStart with another manual implementation of a DSA and, additionally, we'll be publishing a screencast around DSA showing how to build it from scratch without using the wizard in a few weeks.

So, feel free to let us know if you can see another topic where guidance is needed, your feedback is very important to us, it helps to make the blocks better.

Thanks!

New Post: Compact Framework Unit Testing via Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting

Sorry for the huge delay.

To be honest, I cannot completely follow your question. However, I'll try to help you and let me know if I've missunderstood anything.

First of all, if you're creating a new Unit Testing project using the default project template from Visual Studio 2008, it's not targeting a mobile device. For doing that, you can start from a .Net CF project by right clicking on a class code window and select "Create Unit Test".

As an alternative, I've posted a project template in my blog: http://www.mobilepractices.com/2009/05/vs2008-add-new-project-smart-device.html

Either using the first approach, or the project template one, you won't have the unit testing results on a form running on your device. The smart device Unit Testing projects publishes the results on the Test Results windows, as a regular Unit Testing project, and it requires the device connected to your desktop, to see the results.

Cheers,

New Post: Compact Framework Unit Testing via Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting

Environment
Device: HP iPAQ 110 Classic Handheld
OS: Windows Mobile 6 Classic
Framework: .Net Compact Framework 3.5 / C#
Dev Tools: Microsoft Visual Studio 2008

I want to write Unit Test suite my .netcf 3.5 C# application. It must run on device and display results on a form. I tried added Form to Test Project but it does not work. How does one setup to do this? I am using Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting.

I'm starting all this (mobile development) relatively fresh and want to use these Mobile application blocks. Specifically, the Disconnected Services Agent. Unfortunately I note that it would seem the DSA 'quick start' is still in process (no friendly Word Doc or pdf like the other quick starts). Where I'm stuck is that all of the documentation I have found so far (including the book "Microsoft Mobile Development Handbook by Wigley,Moth and Foot") indicate that I need to apply recipes from the Mobile Client Software Factory guidance package.

I saw this in action during a failed detour through SCSF (the Smart Client factory is overkill -- IMO-- for what I want to do) but I can't get it to fly with the new Mobile App Blocks for VS 2008 here.

I went so far as to attempt to install the July 2006 MCSF framework and follow the various articles on forcing it to work with vs 2008 (my thinking was that I perhaps needed the original factory install to get the GP).

Anyway, enough rambling... Can anyone point me in the right direction here. If I've made no sense with my query (not surprising) please feel free to ask me for clarifications!

Thanks in advance!

New Post: Configuration Files

Hi Joel,

Unfortunately, the current Configuration Block implementation is read-only.

This feature hasn't been taken as a high priority yet so it's currently out of scope.

Even though, remember the block is open source, and you can implement the feature by yourself if it worths the effort.

Hope this helps to clarify.

Your suggestion makes perfect sense. In fact, a null network name is getting back the default address and account name right now, so, it definitely makes sense to behave in the same way with an Empty string.

I'm adding the issue and implementing on the code with its corresponding unit tests.

Thanks

The network name comes from the device via ConnectionMonitor, so it's really out of my hands but I suspect it to be some quirkiness from the CellConnection implementation. It seems like there could be a race condition where you can fall into a branch of code thinking you're connected, and then you get disconnected and now the network name starts coming back empty. My workaround was to create a wrapper class that feeds a null value into the method rather than allowing an empty string to pass through. I wonder to what detriment it would be to change the method implementation to fall back to Default if networkName is null or empty. Consider the implementation of ContainsConfigForNetwork. If there is a Default, the return value is true regardless of whether the networkName is null or empty.

Wrapper Class Method:

<font size="2">

</font>

// if networkName is empty an exception is thrown, so pass a null instead.

<font size="2">

</font>

// this is the reason for this class' existence, to prevent this error

<font size="2">

</font>

return wrappedCatalog.GetAccountNameForEndpoint(endpointName, String.IsNullOrEmpty(networkName) ? null : networkName);

}

PS: Endpoint.GetAddressForNetwork has a similar implementation.
Configuration via XML is slow, loosely typed, and requires the use of reflection to load modules and initialize them. All of these made for quite poor performance in v1.

For this release, we're moving to a more strongly-typed, compile-safe approach, where instead of defining modules to load via an XML, you do so via a configuration assembly, which links to the actual modules and loads them into the container. This means that the configuration is written in C#, and is very performant.

Please take a look at the sample and let us know what you think.

New Post: Resource File Question

I've compiled ContainerModel CF 2.0 and referenced the assembly in my WCE 5.0 CF 2.0 project. When there is a defined exception that it throws (as will happen if you attempt to Resolve something that has not been Registered), it accesses a resource file for the exception text. It cannot find said resource and a runtime exception occurs. Does anyone know what I should do to make those resources available to the assembly? Should I copy the resource files into my project or something similar? I had this problem before the CF 2.0 projects were separated out as individual projects as well.

Yes, mvp does not need upgrading but whole mcsf needs. We are using smartparts and workspaces in our apps where users follow process like program flow with lots of views. We even use your orient aware commercial control ;)
